Phase II

Phase II happened last Saturday, August 7 at Bel308. The members got to know more about one another and about effective listening. It was pretty fun!

This year, Phase I had a morning session (9 a.m.-12 noon) and an afternoon session (1 p.m.- 4 p.m.), to fit everyone's schedule.

Ateneo Peers' first GA for SY 2010-2011 happened last July 10, 2010 (Saturday) at Bel308. 45 people, not including our special guests (Kisses Sia, Kesy Pormento and Ella Casas) and sophomores who had NSTP, attended the event.

hello friends!

the love month is here once again! <3 Valentines Day is just around the corner (or what is, for some, Single Awareness Day!). Roses and chocolates are "in," cheesy love quotes are starting to congest the phone lines, even cheesy love songs can be heard everywhere (even on facebook! familiar with the "mahal kita kasi"?)...

well, we are becoming more and more conscious of our relationships with our loved ones as the fated day is coming nearer and nearer. (some of you might even be thinking (and running out of!) of unique ideas to make your loved one feel special) this Love day is beautiful, a perfect opportunity to pause for a while and be reminded of that special four-letter word and it's true meaning/s. (although this act doesn't require an occasion!)

not everyone of us have special someones, but that's never a reason to fret. Go out with your other single friends, spend time with your siblings, parents, take time to thank God of His love and grace, bake a cake, treat yourself to ice cream, go shopping! do whatever special thing you think of, besides, we must also love ourselves! :) hmmm, me, i'm thinking of calling up my parents (who are in the province) and thank them for all the lovin'!!! <3 and a scoop of ice cream for myself won't hurt either!!

Hey guys! Finally, after playing around with custom style sheets and HTML, we have finally come up with our own blog/site!=) Whether you're a PEERS member or some virtual passerby, we welcome you!

So what can you expect from this blog? Well...

1. Of course, you will be updated on what's happening within the organization. Through this blog, we can easily let everyone know about our upcoming activities. And since posting comments here is enabled, we can get support and feedback from you, whether you're a PEERS member or not!

2. Our message board is also a place where we can talk about ANYTHING under the sun (but please take note of the rules =D). It can be a place where you can choose to share all of those life-changing insights (most especially if you're an alumni and you want to guide some of us, clueless seniors!). But don't worry, it can also be a place where you can share your computer game tactics, the poems you've written, etc!=)

The categories in the message board are temporary though. We will base the final categories on the emerging themes of the topics to be posted there.

3. Feeling not good enough? Scared? Confused? This blog is our way of reaching out to you, since we care about YOU and we are here primarily because we want to help you out. We don't have any ready-made solutions for you, but the PEERS core can assist you in finding that solution for yourself. Someone actually seeked for help already (please look at previous post). So c'mon, do yourself a favor too. Fill up our form in the Dear Peers section of this blog.

NOTE: If only we had super magical powers, we would help all of you all at the same time. However, the core can only respond to one person at a time, depending on whose concern needs to be attended to immediately. However, there's a forum version of Dear Peers in the message board. Although you also have a username there to protect your identity, posting your problem/concern in the message board would mean it is open for public viewing.

4. As we said, this is our way of reaching out to you. So to all PEERS members and alumni, if you want to share anything that can benefit people in realizing their goals and potential, then please do so! Please email us at ateneopeers@gmail.com for your contributions. However, please take note that everything is to be screened by the core first.

Dear PEERS: On Losing Your Drive

Dear Peers,

I’m tired most of the time and I don’t feel like doing anything at all. I used to jog every morning but I find it hard to wake up early enough these days. In fact, I find it hard to wake up when I don’t need to and sometimes I miss my classes because of this. And it’s not that sleep remedies my fatigue—I think it just makes it worse! I feel bad because I slept off another class, or I failed another deadline I set out for myself. It’s not that I don’t have goals anymore. I still think about getting back on that dean’s list or getting fitter. And I always say to myself that I would do it later or tomorrow but I never do so I just end up feeling worse. It’s seriously frustrating I want to escape. I’m not suicidal by the way, what I mean is, I get this feeling that I want to be anyone else but myself. It’s so tiring to be me.

Dear Lostgirl,

I don’t know enough of your situation to know why you feel so tired most of the time. On the other hand, I can totally relate! The last time I felt this was in the middle of last sem. I had too many responsibilities and I couldn’t keep up! It was seriously frustrating and I seriously had the urge to throw a tantrum every time I have to wake up to do something. If I were you, this is what I’d do:

First, forgive yourself. We’re human. We’re imperfect. We make mistakes. These are basic things people often conveniently forget. Cut yourself some slack and stop being overly critical. Always know your worth (take a clue: it’s not nothing :D) Always acknowledge to yourself your strengths: it’s not always narcissistic to love yourself, sometimes it’s wiser. One philosopher actually said that the first step to overcome our sense of inadequacy is to make friends with ourselves. (Read Montaigne too, if you want. He’s lovely.)

Second, I suppose self-discipline is one major ingredient if you want to be happy with yourself. Accomplishing things (finishing laundry, a paper, a to-do list, college) can make someone happy. [That’s why you have to give yourself the metaphorical pat in the back whenever you accomplish something.] And to accomplish things, you have to get out of your comfort zone and that takes self-discipline!

Take heart, self-discipline isn’t something you’re born with. One of the stories in William Bennet’s Book of Virtues pointed out that self-discipline is like a muscle; the more you use it the stronger it becomes. Don’t expect to be perfect with your first try. You’re allowed to have mistakes, dear. The point is you try and try.

Third, learn how to motivate yourself. I do it in two ways. I’ll show you with an example: I intend to have better grades. It’s either I imagine the thrill of straight A’s in my card. That gets me through an incredibly boring reading in History. Or I could also the horror of Fs in my card. That gets me off my ass and makes me start studying! You have to have a strong ambition of something and remind yourself of that larger goal whenever you do something small.

But listen, this is if I were just in your case. In the end, you’re still responsible for yourself. Good luck, sleepyhead!

Phase Trainings -- What's that?

To be a member of the organization, aspirants have to complete 3 phase trainings during the 1st semester.

Phase 1 focuses on the individual’s self-understanding. It helps the aspirants know more about their self-concepts and allows them to evaluate their traits such as competence and worth. It helps them pin-point their strengths and weaknesses and aids them in creating a whole inner picture of themselves. Phase 1 is very I-focused in that it talks about what I like/dislike, how I would act/talk, what I would choose/ignore. At the end of it, we realize how what we do, say, act, feel, and think, ultimately affects others.

In Phase 1.1, activities like the Carousel, Rainbow Connection, and the Personality Test open up the individual to his/her likes, fears, quirks, and uniqueness. It paves way for sharing with co-aspirants. In Phase 1.2, activities like Choices of the Heart, Tres Papelitos and Road Map help the aspirants discover things about the past and allow them to consider how to form decisions in the present. Road map in particular promotes an openness to what the future may hold. Phase 1.3 is the culmination of Phase 1. It includes the Empty Room and Inner Child. These two activities are fun yet at the same time calming. While the Empty Room gets people talking about their needs and wants, the Inner Child allows them to reflect more of how their childhood affects who they are now.

Phase 2 allows the aspirants to bond with each other more. The focus shifts from the self to others. It introduces the basics of counseling as well as the SOPs. Instead of talking about what I prefer or what I would choose, Phase 2 moves into how my action would affect you or how what I said can help you. It can get a little more formal, but the fun activities make up for the standard things we learn.

Phase 2.2 starts with the activity called Draw This, and is followed by a series of lectures about the dimensions of counseling, how to be an effective listener, and attending to non-verbals. 2.2 is capped off by the Triads activity in which the aspirants are able to apply what they learned in the three lectures. This is one of the more enjoyable activities because it stresses the things we aren’t always conscious of everyday. Phase 2.3 begins with lectures on listening and responding, the phases of counseling, as well as the differences between problems, crises and emergencies. The culminating activity for 2.3 would be the Morphing Counselor wherein aspirants act as counselors to their facilitator counselees. Phase 2.3 completes the sessions of phase 2.

However, Phase 3 is different compared to the first 2 trainings. This last phase of the PEERS Facilitator Trainings is the culminating event where the knowledge and lessons acquired through the previous phases will be tried and tested. Usually held for 3 days at the beginning of the semestral break, Phase 3 is the last and most fulfilling of all phases. Not only do the aspirants officially become members, this momentous event also serves as a bonding session for the old and new members of the org! One of the many activities for this phase involves the Stations where an old member acts as the counselee and the new members apply their previous trainings. Trust is important in counseling and as such, one of the activities for this training session is the Trust Walk where aspirants are blindfolded and led around the grounds by their 'parents'. Truly this phase is an event to behold, here relationships begin between the old and new members and not only act as an ender to the phase trainings but as a beginning for better camaraderie within the organization.
